My birthday gift from my husband this year was to build me 3 floating shelves above the toilet in our master bathroom. They’ve been on my list for a while and I am very excited to see the project completed. There are tons of photos on Pinterest, so I found one with a tutorial attached from Desert Domicile. Here is the photo that inspired me:
I knew I wanted 3 shelves, 3 is my go-to design number, but when I can’t do 3, I like odd numbers of things. It will give a lot of storage/display space, as the niche is 61″ wide. I relocated the wrought iron items from above the toilet (along with a few that have been sitting on the floor to add to the collection…) to above the tub and measured out how I wanted the spacing; the shelves are 16″ apart.
Next I needed to decide on the stain color for the shelving. I am working on lightening up the house everywhere, but I do really love the dark stain in the inspiration photo, so I am going back and forth with the choices. It brings me to what my friend Jen’s husband Dom calls “scope creep”, where the scope of the project leads to more projects…Should I paint the vanity again and lighten it? And then what color should be mirror frames be?What should the new window treatments look like? Maybe we could make a tray to rest across the soaking tub? Do we really need this giant hamper in here? Scope Creep. Happens every time.
I wound up choosing a light gray stain to give a faded, distressed look and keep things light. I was very unsure about it until I brought one of the stained boards up and placed it in the space. Although I would like to go all gray, the tiling, which won’t be changed any time soon, is beige, so I liked that the stain let some of the brown wood tone show through. I also found some baskets that had the same color combo. lucky break.
I’m very pleased with my birthday present! Stay tuned for some progress in the rest of the room!
Have a lovely Thanksgiving! And please know that I am incredibly thankful for all of you reading my blog and for all your support!
