My daughter is away at school, and will likely not study at her bedroom desk anymore, so we both decided a vanity would be nice in her room. It will also serve us well when she is away and her room is a guest room. So we set to it. Her desk now is an inexpensive Target find with a hutch and it has served us extremely well. She’s had lots of storage in the hutch, which is great, but now she’s ready for a different look and different storage.
I found a great new home for the desk and hutch that will be leaving us & then I found a desk on one of the Facebook marketplace sites. It was perfect in that it had seven drawers to offset the absence of the hutch storage. I reached for my favorite flat black spray paint after some sanding. But I was so happy with my two tone dresser, I decided I would do a different version of that with gray stain this time. I ordered some amazing drawer pulls from Etsy and got to work!
I had a little side step in that I couldn’t find the stain color I wanted in the store i was in, so I opted for deck stain. What I learned is that deck stain is more like paint. So I wound up having to re-sand and then stain the top again, but I am so glad I did.
I had a gold mirror in the basement collecting dust, so that had to succumb to the flat black as well. It will complete the vanity. Then I was lucky enough to find a small scale bench at our Habitat ReStore. I ordered an extra curtain to reupholster the seat and will paint the bench black. My hurdle with the bench is that the screws I need to loosen to reupholster are not flat head or phillips, they’re square, so I am off to Home Depot again!
Since we’re doing this spruce up. we also contemplated re-arranging the room. I drew up the current layout as well as another possibility for my daughter’s approval.
Stay tuned for the final result! It will be a busy weekend-and we can’t ask Dad to help since it’s Father’s Day weekend!
